Cutting Plants

Initial question (Why are we doing this experiment?): Gardeners or home decorators would like cut plants to last as long as possible. How can cut plants be kept fresh as long as possible?
Hypothesis (What we think will happen): Trimming the bottom of cut plants will keep them fresher longer.
Experiment description (what we did): Be sure to explain the experiment in detail so that others could read what you wrote and repeat the experiment.
Tools
Beaker, Water, Scissors, Ruler, Flask, Graduated Cylinder


• We went out to the garden and got 4 sunflowers that were approximately 10 inches long.
• With the two variable sunflowers, we cut ¼ of an inch off the stem daily and then placed them into a flask that was filled with 250ml of water.
• The two controlled sunflowers, we didn’t cut anything off of them, but we still placed them in a flask that was filled with 250ml of water.
• We got water from the same source everyday.

Observations we made:
1. Explain what your data graphs show.
Our graph shows how much water we had to add to the flask everyday to make be 250ml.
First day – Started out with 250 ml. Then for the next 3 days we had to add however much to get it back to 250ml.
Second day- Control (added 50ml) Variable (added 20ml)
Third day- Control (added 14ml) Variable (added 13ml)
Fourth day- Control (added 13ml) Variable (added 15ml)

2. Explain what you observed each day including both control and variable.
On the first day of our experiment our plants were very healthy.
Second Day
Control- Healthy, Kind of bent over, stinky, pollen was falling off of it.
Variable- Healthy, Bent over, stinky, baby spider on it, white sticky stuff dripping off.

Third Day
Control- Bent flower healthier of the two, stinky, white sticky stuff dripping off.
Variable- Bent flower healthier of the two, stinky, white sticky stuff is gone.


Fourth Day

Control- Bent flower healthier of the two, stinky, white sticky stuff
Variable- VERY unhealthy, stinky, sticky, dry, petals are almost gone.

Conclusion:
1. Did the experiment support the hypothesis?
No, because we thought that the variable would last longer but in fact it did not the control plants did.
2. Were the results consistent with other experiments?
Yes , because everybody’s died right along with ours.

Initial question (Why are we doing this experiment?):
Hypothesis (What do we think will happen): Trimming the bottom of cut plants will keep them fresher longer.

We took plants from Hope Street’s garden and we had one that we cut 1/4th inch off (variable) and one we left alone(control). Every day we had to refill the plants water to make sure it was at 200 mL. We made observations everyday in what our plants looked like and how much water they drank.

Observations we made:
1. Explain what your data graphs show.
In our graph the blue is the control and the red is the variable. The variable started out not drinking much water and then it spiked to drinking a lot of water and pretty much leveled out drinking the same amount. The control started out drinking a lot of water and then it dropped to not drinking very much. It started to raised back up in drinking more water.


2. Explain what you observed each day including both control and variable.
Each day we observed that the plants kept getting worse in how they looked. They were starting to look better the first day, but then they started to look droopy as the days went by. It didn’t help cutting the 1/4th inch off everyday.


Conclusion:
1. Did the experiment support the hypothesis?
No, our plants ended up dying. Cutting the 1/4th inch off didn’t make a difference alls it did was cramp our plants in the beaker we had it in.
2. Were the results consistent with other experiments?
All of the experiments varied. Our plants died and several other plants died.

Plant Survival

Initial question (Why are we doing this experiment?):
So we can learn about how plants live. And how they survive depending on how they are treated.

Hypothesis (What do we think will happen):
What the class thought would happen was, that the plant that was cut would last longer than the one we didn’t mess with.

Experiment description (what we did): Be sure to explain the experiment in detail so that others could read what you wrote and repeat the experiment.
First we went out to the garden and cut 4 plants that were about 10in tall then brought them inside and put them in a vase and added 200mill of water to each one then we observed the condition, color, odor, and texture of the control, and variable and how much water they drank for 4 days. Then we would write down all of the results on our data sheet.

Observations we made:
1. Explain what your data graphs show.
It shows that the plant that was cut stayed healthier longer. It drank more because when we cut the stem it drained all the water out of the stem so when we put more water in the jar then the plant sucked up more water. On the first day the plants were unhealthy , a dark red with green and brown. They stayed about the same throughout the whole experiment.
2. Explain what you observed each day including both control and variable.
The variable stayed healthy and drank the most water the control started to dry out and didn’t drink as much water.


Conclusion:
1. Did the experiment support the hypothesis?
Yes, the hypothesis was true, is that the variable was going to drink
more water than the control.
The variable drank about 10 mill more than the control. In the end the
control was 35.5 and the variable was 49.5.


2. Were the results consistent with other experiments?
Yes, in all the other groups the results were the same.
The variable stayed healthier than the control did, and it drank more water.
